Experience

Math is a universal language that has so many practical uses in life that go beyond the high school math experience. My job as a tutor is to ensure your child doesn't see math as another "check-in-the-box" for high school. There are so many applications in real life that can make math interesting and fun. With interest and fun, comes the excitement to learn and the feeling of accomplishment when a student fully understands and grasps the topics at hand. - Algebra and money go hand-in-hand - Geometry and design couldn't "complement" each other any better - Trig/PreCalc will be music to your ears - Calculus...well, that's just hard to differentiate but man it is useful My focus with your child will be to specific to their needs. I will assess them in the first session and afterwards discuss a plan of attack with the parent/guardian. There are short term and long term goals. The short term goals I usually target are getting grade improvements at school, this is what motivates the students to continue wanting to improve. Long term goal is to identify areas of weakness, which can stem back a few math classes from a prior grade. For example, if Geometry is the student's current class, I may spend 15-20 minutes explaining Algebra concepts if Algebra is the reason the student is not consistently getting the right answer to their geometry problem. Math is consisted of building blocks and we can't continue to build up if the bottom blocks are made with wet sand. I began tutoring back when I was in high school; as a senior, I tutored freshmen and fellow classmates in Algebra and Trig/PreCalc. As I went on to attend college at UCLA, I continued to tutor in Algebra I/II, Geometry, Trig/PreCalc, and AP Calculus. I primarily worked the basketball players I coached during that time (high school and club), so I also understand the fine balance between academics and athletics. After graduation, I had the wonderful opportunity to work as a high school math teacher for a semester, teaching Geometry and Calculus with a workshop in Algebra. So it's safe for me to say that I truly enjoy math, its praticality. But more importantly, I want to help your child be successful in math while finding the many uses it has to offer.

Hobbies

If your child is active in sports, especially basketball, I can also help give them pointers in their cross-over or shooting technique. On a more serious note, I work well with student athletes or those heavily involved in extracurricular acitivies and can help them develop a study plan for the week if this is an area of struggle. Pending the topics to be discussed that session, I may have sporting examples to use to capture their attention. I enjoy working with kids of all ages, while I have 3 kids of my own ages 8, 7, and 6, I prefer to work with high school students at this time for a better balance.
